Pyjamas and a peasant dress!!

I finally finished the xmas pyjamas for Squeak, I finished them on xmas eve! I did cut it a little short, but I did make a peasant dress of the same fabric when I should have been working on the pyjamas.

Here’s a link to the site I found the pattern on, I LOVED it!!! there was a few variations I could of made, short or long sleeves, different necklines, and even the option of a shirred bodice. I was sooo tempted to dig up some bobbin elastic to make that one.

It looks better on. the sleeves puff out so beautifully!

Squeak wore it to the extended family xmas, and she happily wore it all day. The light cotton was great as it was a warm day, 30C degrees, possibly up to 35C degrees. (85 to 95 farenheit). It was a warm day, a lot of the other kids stripped down to their nappies (diapers) and singlets.

Squeak’s pyjamas came up well, the top was a lot more fiddly than I thought. Gathers, and the yoke took more time than I had estimated.

Here they are, fresh out of the wash, and needing a good iron.

The ruffle at the bottom of the leg is cute, but for the next pair I will just make it like the sleeves, it will save fabric, and save a lot of time instead of gathering the ruffle, and sewing it in place. I think the sleeves are gorgeous. The yoke is pretty. I used press studs instead of buttons for the back opening. I think this will be gorgeous in a simple print. It always takes a lot longer the first time you make something from a pattern. I am used to flat fabric, an making quilts, but making garments is a whole new ballgame to me. It is something I am enjoying though.

I will have to update soon on the 8-ply bubbles blanket, and show off the progress on the green fern blanket, and the new 4-ply feathersoft knitted blanket for Squeak. I know I have too many unfinished projects, but Squeak opened the drawer I keep my knitting in, broke open the band on the ball, and snuggled up to it. How could I resist making her something with it.

Have you sarted a new xmas tradition?

Lots of love,

Project Pyjamas for Squeak!!

It is 8 sleeps til Xmas and I really really wanted to make some beautiful jarmies for Squeak. I want my xmas morning photos to have pretty homemade pyjamas, So I have to stop dragging my chain and get started.

I purchased the fabric today at my favorite little fabric shop. They have a nice sale table and these cheeky monkeys caught my eye

monkeyfabric

I traced my pattern pieces onto greaseproof paper, as I always trace, I never cut up the pattern. This pattern sheet makes up to a size 8, a 26in chest, so I could be using this pattern for a few years

pattern

I could get the fabric out and start cutting the fabric, but I think that might be tomorrow night’s project. I think I need to be fresh to do that, and it is a little too late. I stay up waaaay too late.

I chose the monkeys as I love monkeys, and we can use the pyjamas all summer, not just for Xmas

Do you like the fabric?

Lots of love,

Feeling better, a bit

I am slowly recovering from my chest and sinus infection. Last week I was on antibiotic tablets, but I wasn’t improving, so Monday morning my Dad drove us to the Drs, as he was worried that I was too sick to drive. The Dr was glad I had came in when I did, and next thing I was in the treatment room, for an antibiotic injection, a steroid injection, and a stint on the nebuliser for asthma as well.

On monday night I started to feel better, which was great! Tuesday was another antibiotic injection, and another stint on the nebuliser. Today was just an antibiotic injection, hopefully the last. All the injections were in the buttock muscle, so it can be sore to sit down, and I have a nice collection of bruises just under the waistband of my jeans!

I started the Girl’s All-in-One Sleeveless Top just before I caught ther cold that led to the chest and sinus infection, so I have been working on it for almost 3 weeks. It has been slow progress as I didn’t feel up to knitting, and with Squeak recovering from the cold, I pretty much ignored knitting and enjoyed quiet time with Squeak.

It is a horrible colour to take a photo of, but a beautiful colour on Squeak, I’m very excited for this to be finished for her to wear.

I tried to reduce the brightness and glare so you can get a true idea of the yoke, It is gorgeous. I love tops knitted with a one-piece yoke. Now that Squeak is in toddler sizes, there is a lot less knitting patterns that take my fancy.  I tended to only buy patterns for babies, but now I am running out of choices.

It is likely I will have this finished within a week or two, then onto pyjamas for Squeak. I was planning long pyjamas made of printed cotton as the weather is warming up, but Squeak has developed a habit of sleeping on her front, and kicking off all her blankets. If this continues I want her to keep wearing the flannels until the weather changes to be more summery and milder at night, as it keeps her that little bit warmer, which means less likely to wake up in the night wanting Mummy or Daddy to find the blanket for her to snuggle, for her then to kick the blanket off within an hour. At the moment she is happily warm and comfy with just the flannel pyjamas, but I really want the better fit of the elastic in the cuffs of the legs and sleeves, and it is a daily struggle to do up the buttons on the pyjama shirt. Hopefully I can start on them by the weekend, but it might just be wishful thinking!

It’s a bargain!!

On Saturday I wanted to pop down to the local Lincraft store, which sells fabric, yarn and all other crafty things. It was only a 20 minute drive, and the AFL football grand final was on, so it would be a quieter day. Football is very popular in Victoria, and AFL is very different to most other types of football.

I wanted to buy some flannelette to make Squeak some pyjamas, I already purchased the pattern, a lovely yoked top, with frills at the ends of the sleeves and legs. It looked so pretty, and less buttonholes!! I am very happy with my choice, and my mother-in-law thinks it’s a good pattern. She made clothes for her boys quite often, and is a great help as I haven’t made clothes before, only quilting. So I am going from 2-dimensional sewing to 3-dimensional. It shall be interesting. The pattern info says I can use flannelette, cotton, cotton blends and gingham. I was leaning towards flannelette as I thought it would be snuggly, and cute. It isn’t the season for flannelette though. Lincraft had signs up for 40% dress fabrics, and a sign said $4.50 per metre for flannel. I picked out 3 I liked, and went to the counter. I asked to check the price before they cut my lengths, and they said it was $15 a metre. I was not impressed, and their explanation was that it was craft fabric, and the other rack was the dress flannel, which was on sale. I decided to look elsewhere as each pair of pyjamas would take about 2 metres, and I can’t justify $30 on a pair of pyjamas. When I mentioned this to my Dad, he said it would be cheaper to buy adults pyjamas and cut them down for that price.

There is another fabric store just around the corner, A sweet little shop that has just fabric, and fabric accessories. There was a table at the front, with a sale rack. I chatted to the assistant about pyjamas, and she suggested cotton, as it is coming into warmer weather. There was some beautiful retro-inspired fabric, one in 3 colourways, and a pretty brown fabric with cute animals on it. I bought 2 metres (just over 2 yards) of each. I am tempted to go back tomorrow to get the rest on the rolls, I love it soooo much. The amazing thing is it was $3 per metre!!

I also bought 17 balls of yarn in the Lincraft end-of-season yarn clearout. It cost $33.33, 13 balls at $1.49, and 4 at 3.49 if I remember correctly. All 8-ply. I am considering going back to see what they have in 4-ply, which I could use in the knitting machine. I could spend a fortume on yarn and fabric at the moment.

This should keep me amused for a while!
